Altrusa Projects
Many local agencies have benefited from Altrusa
projects. A plaque in the Madison County Courthouse
shows Altrusa being awarded the Civic Club Council Award
three times. The first winning project was the
establishment in 1980 of the Hospital Hospitality House (now
known as the Blount Hospitality House); the next award was
for coordinating the dress and display of more than 500 teddy
bears for the Salvation Army's Christmas Charities; and the
most recent award recognized Altrusa for our "Books - From
Kids to Kids" project - used books donated by community
children for their less fortunate peers.
Altrusa Scholarship
Altrusa International, Inc., of Huntsville, AL has
endowed a permanent scholarship at the University of
Alabama in Huntsville in memory of charter member
Fannie Lou Nicholson. The "Altrusa scholarship" will be
open to women in their sophomore, junior, or senior years
who are majoring in education, nursing, engineering,
science, or mathematics. At left, Dr. David Williams,
President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville,
is shown accepting a check for the scholarship from
Anne Dunn and Sherry Walker.

Blount Hospitality House
In 1980, Altrusans opened the doors of the Hospital
Hospitality House that we continue to support.
Grateful boarders from forty-eight Alabama counties,
thirty-eight states, and nine foreign countries have
been helped with a home away from home while their
loved ones are hospitalized locally. The Blount
House has registered well over 18,000 guests since its
inception.

Service Projects
Locally, club members choose among many service
projects. Special Olympics is a favorite! Each
year, Altrusa volunteers work in the food and
refreshment stands during Track and Field Events.

Encouraging Literacy
Altrusa is a strong proponent of literacy issues on a
national and local level. Huntsville members frequently
become volunteer tutors and lend assistance to the Boys and
Girls Club, Sapp Center, Children's Advocacy Center, Girls
Inc., Hope Place, and the Adult Learning Center. The
club participates with other Altrusans nationwide in a "Make
a Difference Day" project each October.
Leadership Development
Altrusa encourages leadership among its members by
offering District leadership workshops,
local mentoring programs, developmental meetings/programs as
well as opportunities to grow personally and professionally
through community service.
Education Program
The Huntsville club is in the process of creating a
permanent scholarship endowment at the University of Alabama
in Huntsville. This scholarship is a memorial to the
late Fannie Lou Nicholson, for whom the previous educational
fund was named. The new Altrusa scholarship will provide
aid to a woman majoring in education, nursing, engineering,
science, or mathematics.
Working Together
Altrusa's mission is to fund unmet needs in our
community. Each September, Altrusans assist the
Historic Huntsville foundation by helping vendors set
up for Old fashioned Trade Day on the Square.
Proceeds from the sale of baked goods and used books
fund community projects such as the Sapp Center,
Book Bags, and the Blount
Hospitality House.
